Martha Blume
Director of Youth Ministries

Martha oversees and develops the Church School, including Godly Play and Workshop Rotation, Nursery and Children's Chapel programs. She enjoys working alongside others who share her enthusiasm for children's education and Christian formation.
Tasked with taking a critical look at the church school and youth curricula when she joined the staff in 2004, Martha implemented the Journey to Adulthood program for the youth, beginning with the Rite-13 class for 6th and 7th graders. Kim Clarke is now the Youth Director and leader of this youth program.
Martha developed the Children's Chapel program for Pre-K, K and first graders to model the Rite II liturgy used at the 10:30 worship service. These young children experience their own worship service for the liturgy of the Word, then join their parents for the Eucharist.
In Fall 2006, Martha implemented Godly Play, a church school program based on the Montessori model. This program invites the Pre-K, K and first grade children to hear God's word through storytelling and respond to it with materials such as wooden figures, a “desert box,” felt materials and other art supplies.
Another new curriculum begun in Fall 2006 is called Workshop Rotation, for 2nd through 5th grades. This program takes the children through four learning stations in as many weeks, based on a particular Bible story. These stations may include art, science, storytelling, drama, puppets, computers, games or cooking.

Martha is an experienced environmental educator and science teacher, who has developed and taught programs for children--in formal school settings and summer camps, on boats and in science museums.
