FROM THE VESTRY

An important element of St. Peter.s continued vitality will be its ability to find ways to effectively incorporate newcomers into the life of our parish. To that end, the Vestry has decided to establish a commission to examine this important topic, to be led by Beryl Lyons. The specific charge given this commission follows:

Newcomers Commission

The Commission is being asked to review the current ways St. Peter.s .welcomes. newcomers and to provide recommendations for ways that system might be improved.

To that end, the Vestry suggests the following elements be included in their report.

Describe the current system whereby newcomers are incorporated into the life of St. Peter.s, both formally and informally, from the time of their first contact with the parish to their first commitment to the parish (defined perhaps by a request to become formal members or by their first annual pledge.)

Determine why recent newcomers to St. Peter.s chose to come and have chosen to stay

Assess the effectiveness of current welcoming techniques, including but not limited to:
  • Nametags
  • Newcomer Sundays
  • Newspaper advertising
Investigate outside resources such as the diocese and/or library for .best practices. of welcoming newcomers.
  • How can we identify newcomers?
  • What are the roles of staff and vestry in welcoming?
  • What is needed to .train. welcomers
  • Is there a need for a .mentoring. program for newcomers to follow up the initial period of welcome
Anyone who would like to be a part of the newcomers committee to contact Beryl Lyons at 271-0203 or the church office.

Thank you for taking on this task. It is a critical next step in furthering the mission of St. Peter.s.

We look forward to hearing from you in the winter of 2006-07, perhaps at our February Vestry meeting.
